Just a 40km ferry trip from Brisbane, visitors can discover crystal-clear creeks and lagoons, coastal heath, rocky headlands, stunning wildflowers and miles of sandy beaches at Moreton Island National Park and Recreation Area.

Features of the Island include:

  • Visit Queensland’s first lighthouse at Cape Moreton (built in 1857, from island sandstone) and stand atop the island’s headland, and take in the island’s breathtaking views.
  • Chance to see marine animals in the surrounding waters including turtles, dolphins and also migrating humpback whales (in May to November)
  • Climb Mount Tempest, the southern hemisphere’s tallest vegetated sand dune, and take in panoramic views out over the bay.
  • Visit the ruins of Rous Battery, a frontline defence in World War II.
  • Walk through The Desert, created over thousands of years by currents and prevailing winds moving individual grains of sand.
  • Swim, Kayak or Paddle board in Blue Lagoon, a freshwater oasis set amid flowering heathland.
